All sports teams at Georgetown University are called the Hoyas, although it is the men’s basketball team that is the most popular and well known. The Hoyas are highly regarded both for their great team success and the amazing players generated by the team that greatly succeed even after graduation, both on the court and off. Such notable players include Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Allen Iverson, and Congressman Henry Hyde and General James L. Jones.
The Hoyas are a wildly successful team. They have reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four five times, have also won the National Championship (1984), and won the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament seven times, while also winning the Big East regular season title ten times. The Hoyas have also made appearances at the NCAA Tournament twenty eight times and the National Invitation Tournament eleven times.
With Thompson as a superb coach, the Hoyas are known for their offensive efficiency and prowess. Coach Thompson taught the Hoyas a variant of a style of play that he learned while serving under Coach Pete Carril at Princeton. This style has proven to be very effective in leading to great success for the Hoyas.
In 2007, the Hoyas celebrated its centennial by honoring several of the team’s most popular alumni at the Georgetown-Marquette game. The great spirit and skill held by the team further led them to many more successful seasons, including winning the regular season Big East Championship, as well as the Big East Tournament Championship. In the same season, Jeff Green was named as the Big East Player of the year and the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. After sporadic successes in the following season, the Hoyas once again improved the game and advanced to the championship game of the 2010 Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament. This success of the Hoyas has carried over the following seasons.
The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team plays its home games at the Verizon Center and even have their own permanent locker room, as well as coach’s and trainer’s offices. The Verizon Center also provides a full practice gym, however, the Hoyas usually use the on-campus practice facility at McDonough Arena. Even though the Verizon Center is off campus, the students and other fans still pack the house to capacity for all home games. Hoyas pride is strong in the DC region, which truly shows at their home games. The roar of excitement easily takes one back to their college days.
